Player Profile : Victor Lindelof

Finally, the month-long transfer saga during the January transfer window regarding the move of the highly rated Victor Lindelof has come to an end, after Manchester United signed him for £30 million in the summer transfer window.

In the 2016-2017 season, United tried several different centre-back partnerships but due to injuries and Chris Smalling’s inability to reproduce last season’s form, none of the partnerships could continue for long. It was evident to Jose Mourinho that the club needed a quality centre-back who would be quick, strong and a good reader of the game. He found all these qualities in Benfica’s Victor Lindelof.

The Swedish international has proven to be a go-to for last man situations, and has completed 52 interceptions and 119 clearances, with an impressive pass accuracy of 90%.

At just 22 and 23 years of age, respectively, Lindelof and Eric Bailly seem to be a partnership for the future. Both are incredibly quick off the ball, strong in their tackles, and commandable in the air.

Across the other end of the pitch, his show-boating skills have always enthralled the Benfica fans and his ability to find the top corners of the net with his stunning free-kicks is a very promising sign for the Manchester United faithful, due to the lack of set piece goals scored the past season.

Lindelof is a player mature beyond his years. Touted to be one of the best defenders in the world by fellow countryman, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, he is certainly a great buy for United, as they look to claim their first title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
